Join the Culture Central Board

As part of our ongoing commitment to inclusivity, relevance and dynamism, Culture Central is seeking two new board members.

What is Culture Central?

Culture Central is a collective, and a collective voice for the cultural sector in the West Midlands. We convene, challenge and connect, to create opportunities through culture, for the people and places of the region.

We know the power Culture has on people and places.

We believe in the strength of working collectively.

We do this to support a dynamic, resilient, inclusive cultural ecology.

Culture Central is a cultural sector membership organisation and an Arts Council England Investment Principles Support Organisation. Our role is to advocate for and support our membership and deliver a range of programmes and activity, which you can find out more about here.  You can see who our membership is here.

Principles

A collective, and a collective voice

Speaking with and for all sizes of not-for-profit and commercial organisations, individual practitioners and freelancers who work in the sector, across all forms of arts, culture and heritage.

Inclusivity & Collaboration

We work to promote genuine partnerships and collaborations across and beyond the cultural sector and region. Everyone is invited and welcomed, with positive action to ensure representation, equity and access, so the sector is a place for all to thrive.

Transparency & Authenticity

We are open with our communication and information and listen carefully and thoughtfully to all voices. We work to develop and support the cultural sector as a supporter, not a producer, of artistic work. Everything we do is for this purpose.

What does being a Board member involve?

  • Attending quarterly board meetings to provide oversight, scrutiny, advice and support as well as ensuring the organisation is well managed and risks identified and managed.

  • You will have the best interests of Culture Central at heart when attending meetings, making decisions and representing the organisation.

  • You will engage in decision-making and share your perspective, ideas, advice and knowledge with the rest of the board.

  • You will also be someone who is willing and able to shout about the work of Culture Central and the wider Cultural Sector in the region.

  • Meetings will be on a quarterly basis, dependent on need and time to read papers and advise in between should be allocatedwhere necessary. The time required is 1-2 days every quarter.

This is an unpaid role.

If you are interested in finding out more please email yasaminsaeidi@culturecentral.co.uk.

Application Process:

To express your interest in the role, please send us an expression of interest to info@culturecentral.co.uk of no more than 2 pages long if written, or you can make a video or audio message which is no more than 5 minutes long. The deadline for expressions of interest is 12:00 on the 25th March 2024.

Make sure you…

  • Tell us where you are from and the work you do, and if you work in the cultural sector or somewhere else.

  • Tell us what you think you would bring to the organisation and how your skills could support the board and team in achieving its vision.

  • Tell us why you would like to have this role and the principles that matter most to you.

We will then have a series of interview sessions, through late March, which will be relatively informal.

Commitment to positive action

Culture Central is committed to inclusive practice and would actively encourage applications from people underrepresented in our organisation. The characteristics or identities that we welcome applications from include:

We recognise this is not an exhaustive list, and we encourage applications from people who may have faced barriers to working in the cultural sector (this may be because of age, unpaid caring responsibilities, or being LGBTQ+ for example).

*A care-experienced person is defined as anyone who has been, or is currently in care, or is from a looked-after background at any stage in their life, no matter how short, including adopted children who were previously looked-after.
