The Board of Culture Central is pleased to announce that Steve Ball has been appointed as its new Director and will take up the position from the 1st April 2019.
Steve has lived in Birmingham for more than thirty years. He was the founding artistic director of The Play House, has been Head of Arts for Birmingham City Council and, since 2003, has been Associate Director at The REP. He will continue in this role in a part time capacity as well as leading Culture Central.
Steve will replace Gary Topp who has led the organisation since 2016 and is moving on to lead the Arnolfini in Bristol.Culture Central has established itself as a key leadership organisation in the city and the region and has successfully delivered a wide range of projects including the establishment of Dance Hub Birmingham, the handover and homecoming events for the Commonwealth Games and Transforming narratives- a major international project with Bangladesh and Pakistan that will launch on the 21st March.
I am delighted to be handing over to Steve to lead the organisation through its next phase. It has been a privilege to work in Birmingham and to get to know one of the UK’s most dynamic and exciting cultural cities.
Birmingham’s cultural organisations face significant challenges and opportunities and l am convinced that by continuing to work together we can bring considerable added value to the cultural life of the city. I am keen to build on the great work of my predecessors and the board by leading Culture Central through this next important stage of development.
Dorothy Wilson, Chair of Culture Central:
The board of Culture Central looks forward to working closely with Steve to realise the ambitions and potential of the cultural sector in the city and region. On behalf of the board we thank Gary Topp for his leadership and energy in establishing Culture Central and wish him well in his new role at Arnolfini.
